The Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU) is facing opposition from the Uganda Liberal Teachers Union (ULTU) over its call for a continued nationwide strike. UNATU has been protesting the government’s failure to honor its commitments on salary enhancements for teachers.
ULTU President General Mutesasira Evans Kaganizo has rejected the strike, citing bad timing during the third term and potential negative impacts on learners. “The call for the strike in the third term is bad timing, and Uganda Liberal Teachers Union will not take part in it,” Mutesasira said.
Instead, Mutesasira encourages teachers to explore money-making ventures and apply for funding through the Presidential SACCO, which received 6.6 billion shillings from a 20 billion shilling grant to support teachers’ projects and provide side incomes. “We advise UNATU to continue engaging government in a peaceful manner than putting the future of the children at stake,” Mutesasira added.

The development highlights the divisions among teachers’ unions in Uganda, with UNATU pushing for better pay and working conditions, while ULTU prioritizes alternative income-generating projects for teachers.
End.
