BUSHENYI / KAMPALA – Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi has beaten 60 schools to become Champions of Enjuba Spelling Bee 2026 Junior Category.
After winning the Ankole Region Spelling Bee 2026, the school went ahead to be crowned national champions at the national finals.
Parental Care Bushenyi’s win came following a hot contest from Elgon View Primary School Tororo, but the courageous Lisa Pearl Kebirungi couldn’t let the crown slip away.

The competition, which took place at Kampala Serena Hotel, attracted 263 participants from 60 schools across Uganda. This was the 14th edition of the Enjuba Spelling Bee.
Having participated in the previous ten editions, Parental Care Nursery and Primary School Bushenyi capitalized on experience to overcome opponents.
The event was organized in a knockout style where a learner would immediately be eliminated once they failed to spell a given word.
Three rounds of spell, fill the missing letter and spell, identify what you see and name determined who goes to the next stage.
Ministry Commends Young Spellers:
Hajjat Dr. Safina Mutumba, Assistant Commissioner in charge of Early Childhood and Pre-Primary Education at Ministry of Education and Sports, represented Permanent Secretary Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda as Chief Guest.

In her remarks, she appreciated participants for taking their courage to big stages and encouraged them, saying they may have failed some words but they are not failures, fronting relevance of competence-based curriculum.
She expressed surprise that these young ones can spell words that even adults may fail.
Dr. Safina asked teachers and parents to encourage children beyond just spelling but to understand what they are able to spell.
In her conclusive remarks, schools were tasked to look at digital thinking and early literacy.
> “Every child is a potential reader, writer and thinker. Our role is to provide a friendly environment where every potential is realized,” she said.
Prizes and Next Stage:
The event was sponsored by NBS Television, StarTimes, Kampala Serena Hotel, Potea Foundation, Brass for Life Uganda, Knowledge for Children, UMC Hospital and Plan International.
The two categories of participants — Junior (4-13yrs) and Senior (13-18yrs) — will see their respective winners fly to Algeria to tussle it out with other spellers across Africa.
As event came to an end, all participants walked away with certificates of participation while winners walked away with prizes ranging from cheques to one-year medical insurance from UMC Hospital and laptops.
