KAMPALA — The Government of Uganda has launched a Shs694 billion (€145m) water project to supply over one million people in Wakiso West who have been facing water rationing.
The Wakiso West Water and Sanitation Project will draw water from Lake Victoria at Bwerenga to serve Kyengera, Nsangi, Kajjansi, Kasanje, Kiringente, Wakiso and Mpigi Town Councils, plus the Entebbe Road corridor. At least 160,000 beneficiaries live in informal settlements.
NWSC signed a Shs47.5bn consultancy contract with Danish firm NIRAS A/S and German firm Fichtner GmbH & Co. KG, with Ugandan firms M&E Associates and Alliance Consultants as sub-consultants.

NWSC MD Dr. Silver Mugisha said the project will provide uninterrupted safe water to over one million people.
The project will address supply gaps in western suburbs. Kampala’s Ggaba and Katosi plants are on the eastern side, forcing water to travel long distances to the west. Areas like Kyengera, Mutundwe and Lubowa have been on rationing, with residents buying a jerrycan at Shs1,000-2,000.
The Bwerenga plant will treat 62.5m litres per day, with intake capacity of 200m litres. It will have 94.2km of transmission pipes, 78.5km of secondary pipes, five reservoirs with 15.25m litres capacity, and pumping stations at Buloba, Katende, Maya and Ssekiwunga.
At least 941 prepaid community dispensers will be installed in informal settlements, plus a faecal sludge treatment plant in Kajjansi and solar panels generating 2,945KW.
The consultancy will take 20 months for design and 30 months for construction supervision. Phase one (Shs20bn) is funded by Impact Fund Denmark, phase two (Shs27.6bn) by a concessional loan.
