BUHWEJU DISTRICT – Buhweju Community Transformation Initiatives Ltd (BCTI) has launched a renewed campaign calling upon all households in Buhweju District to embrace commercial Hass avocado farming before the end of 2026, describing the initiative as a key pillar in transforming the district into a prosperous agricultural and agro-industrial hub under its tenfold growth strategy.
According to BCTI, the district’s fertile soils, favorable climate and hardworking population provide a strong foundation for large-scale commercial agriculture. However, despite these natural advantages, many households continue to struggle with low incomes, limited market opportunities and reliance on traditional farming practices that generate minimal returns.
To reverse this trend, BCTI is promoting Hass avocado cultivation as a long-term income-generating venture capable of lifting thousands of families out of poverty through commercial agriculture and agro-industrialization.

The organization noted that although the project has already been introduced, participation remains low, with only a few farmers, BCTI itself and some local leaders actively engaged. It is now encouraging every household to join before the end of the year.
BCTI has also proposed innovative approaches such as Contract Farming and the Community Wealth Creation (CWC) model to ensure that even residents without land can benefit. Under this arrangement, landowners can partner with investors or individuals with technical expertise and labour, allowing more people to participate in the lucrative avocado value chain.
The initiative encourages families to retain ownership of their land while entering mutually beneficial agreements that maximize productivity and income. BCTI says this collaborative approach reflects its broader vision of networking communities to create sustainable wealth.
Globally, demand for Hass avocados continues to rise, particularly in Europe, Asia, the Middle East, East Africa and other international markets where consumers prefer the fruit because of its superior taste, high nutritional value, long shelf life and export quality.
Uganda is increasingly positioning itself as a competitive exporter of quality Hass avocados, creating significant opportunities for farming communities to diversify their income and access high-value international markets.
BCTI believes Buhweju District is strategically positioned to become one of Uganda’s leading Hass avocado-producing areas because of its reliable rainfall, fertile soils, suitable altitude and growing interest among farmers to adopt modern commercial agriculture.
The organization has tasked its 38 founding members with leading by example by dedicating at least one acre of land to Hass avocado production or planting a minimum of 100 trees along their land boundaries.
According to BCTI projections, a single mature Hass avocado tree can generate at least UGX 140,000 annually, meaning that 100 trees could earn a household approximately UGX 14 million each year. The organization believes that if every household in Buhweju reaches this income level, poverty could be significantly reduced while enabling families to educate their children and invest in other productive ventures.
BCTI’s long-term target is to empower approximately 40,000 households across Buhweju District through commercial Hass avocado farming.
Recognizing concerns about market access, BCTI says one of the project’s major strengths is the establishment of a structured contract farming system aimed at guaranteeing markets for farmers.
Under the proposed arrangement, participating farmers would receive quality seedlings, technical training, extension services, pest and disease management support, quality assurance, produce aggregation, storage facilities and reliable market linkages to ensure they produce export-standard avocados while benefiting from collective marketing.
The organization says this coordinated approach will reduce production risks, improve profitability and strengthen farmers’ bargaining power in both domestic and international markets.
Beyond improving household incomes, the project is expected to create employment opportunities for young people and women through nursery establishment, seedling production, farm labour, extension services, harvesting, transportation, storage, processing, value addition, marketing and export logistics.
BCTI further noted that the initiative aligns with Uganda’s national development agenda, which prioritizes commercial agriculture, agro-industrialization, export promotion and household income growth.
As it continues engaging farmers, development partners, financial institutions and government agencies, BCTI says its vision remains to transform Buhweju into a nationally recognized centre for Hass avocado production where ordinary households directly benefit from the expanding global avocado industry.
The organization has also appealed to government to increase investment in the distribution of Hass avocado and coffee seedlings to accelerate the district’s agricultural transformation.
