KAMPALA, UGANDA – Centenary Bank has dismissed social media reports alleging that its headquarters, Mapeera House, was on fire, calling the claims a “malicious attack” aimed at causing public alarm. In a statement issued on Friday evening, the bank reassured the public that Mapeera House “is not on fire physically or even figuratively” and emphasized its commitment to transparency and accountability.
The bank urged the public to verify information before sharing, warning that such falsehoods risk undermining confidence in the financial sector. This development follows a similar incident earlier in the week when dfcu Bank was forced to issue a statement debunking online reports alleging internal turmoil.
Analysts say these incidents highlight a growing wave of targeted disinformation campaigns against financial institutions. Technology lawyer Silver Kayondo noted that Uganda’s next frontier is not just political speech but also tackling broader online harms, emphasizing the need for societal, national, and organizational resilience against disinformation.
