KAMPALA, UGANDA – Opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of “deliberately frustrating” his 2026 presidential bid after rejecting hundreds of signatures submitted to support his nomination. According to a letter dated September 19, 2025, and signed by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama, out of 130 districts, only 80 met the minimum threshold of 100 registered voters per district, while 18 districts fell short.
Bobi Wine reacted strongly, claiming the EC’s decision was evidence of “incompetence and partiality.” He alleged that the Commission was deliberately striking off names of his supporters despite NUP submitting “more than enough signatures per district.” The NUP leader also accused security agencies, including GISOs, DISOs, and RDCs, of intimidating supporters who endorsed his candidacy.
The affected districts include Gulu City, Iganga, Kakumiro, Ntungamo, Soroti City, Rubanda, Rwampara, and Yumbe. Bobi Wine urged registered voters from these areas to re-submit their signatures at the NUP headquarters on Saturday. With nominations just days away, NUP has announced plans to collect additional signatures to secure Kyagulanyi’s place on the ballot.
