Kisoro, Uganda – A tragic incident has shaken the Nyanamo detach under the 35th battalion in Kisoro district, as a UPDF personnel allegedly took his own life by shooting. Pte Kwesiga Samuel, 32, attached to the unit, was found dead in his unipot on August 18, 2025, with a gunshot wound.
According to eyewitnesses, Kwesiga had watched the English Premier League match between Manchester United and Arsenal on August 17, 2025, and had returned to his quarters around 9 pm, citing fatigue. The next morning, a gunshot was heard, and colleagues rushed to his unipot to find him lying in a pool of blood.
The police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Kwesiga’s death, with inquiries underway to ascertain the motive behind the suspected suicide. The body has been handed over to the UPDF Command Structure for burial arrangements.
The incident has raised concerns about the potential link between sports betting and mental health, particularly in the context of high-stakes matches like the EPL. As the investigation continues, the UPDF and police are working to determine the circumstances leading up to Kwesiga’s tragic death.
