KATERERA, RUBIRIZI – Police in Rubirizi District have cautioned student leaders against misusing social media, taking drugs and alcohol.
This call was made by ASP Afande Nabwiro Ester, the OC Station Katerera, who was chief guest while addressing student leaders from the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) from all senior schools in Rubirizi District. The meeting was held at Archbishop Bakyenga Secondary School in Katerera.
Afande Nabwiro Ester said students tend to misuse phones by spreading false information on social media, abusing and blackmailing others. She warned that those who spread false information will be arrested and charged.

She advised students to use phones for developmental purposes like business, studies, research and networking.
> “Students should act exemplary and avoid drugs and alcohol. The main purpose why you come to school is to pave way for your future. There is no way you will pave your future when you are sneaking with drugs and alcohol. You will end up becoming a useless person in community,” Afande Nabwiro said.
She added that Rubirizi Police is there to protect law and order and committed to arrest any student found drunk during school time and those who defame local leaders on social media, noting that it is against the law.
She urged student leaders to be a bridge between school administrators and students to prevent strikes and help schools in maintaining peace and discipline to ensure that students’ concerns are handled through right channels instead of inciting strikes.
*UNSA Coordinator Speaks*
Meanwhile, Mr. Kashozi Abdul Karimu, the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) Coordinator for Rubirizi District, explained that today’s training focused on strengthening and equipping students with leadership skills, discipline, promoting academic excellence, fighting strikes in schools and promoting unity amongst learners in Rubirizi.
He emphasized the role of student leaders in fighting school dropouts and promoting girl-child education.
> “Student leaders have a big role to play in their schools, including maintaining discipline, being a bridge between school administration and students, representing students’ views and promoting unity, peace and academic excellence,” Kashozi said.
He noted that UNSA trainings are meant to empower student leaders to become responsible, patriotic and exemplary leaders both in school and in the community — bringing together all students in Uganda to have one voice, to promote education and to prepare young leaders for the future.
Student leaders from different schools in Rubirizi attended the training and promised to take the knowledge back to their respective schools.
