KAMPALA,UGANDA – Former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago was driven from Kira Division Police Station toward Makindye shortly after 2 p.m. on Tuesday and is expected to be arraigned in court.
Lukwago emerged from the police station looking frail, accompanied by his lawyers and family members. Supporters, family members, and journalists had camped at the station since news of his detention emerged.
Doreen Nyajura, who served as Deputy Lord Mayor under Lukwago, said he was abruptly taken toward Makindye during lunch hours.

Lukwago is expected to face treason-related charges. According to the prosecution, his case has been joined to that of Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, whom he has been representing.
The prosecution alleges that Lukwago is directly linked to meetings allegedly held by Besigye as part of a plot to overthrow the Ugandan government. Court documents filed by the state that one of the meetings took place in Geneva, Switzerland, and was attended by several opposition figures, including Lukwago and Salaam Musumba.
The state alleges that between 2023 and November 2024, Besigye, his aide Hajj Obeid Lutale Kamulegeya, and others held meetings in Geneva, Athens, and Nairobi, where they allegedly sought military, financial, and logistical support to overthrow the government.
Court records indicate that investigators are relying on minutes, recordings, electronic communications, and witness testimony relating to the meetings. The state has also applied to shield the identities of several witnesses it intends to call during the trial.
