Kampala, Uganda – Eighteen trainees from Kanungu District have graduated from a welding program, receiving certificates of completion and a boost of support from a dedicated government minister.
The ceremony, held today at the Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI) Namanve campus, marked the successful conclusion of a Basic Welding and Business Management training program under the Baryomunsi skilling initiative.
The trainees, who began their studies on April 1st, 2025, expressed immense gratitude for the opportunity. Minister of ICT & National Guidance, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, a key sponsor of the program, praised UIRI’s Executive Director, Prof. Charles Kwesiga, and his team for fostering innovation and business incubation. He pledged to serve as an ambassador for UIRI, highlighting the institute’s vital role in empowering Uganda’s youth.

Dr. Baryomunsi’s commitment extended beyond words. He announced plans for a two-month advanced certification course in June 2025, specifically designed to equip the graduates for high-paying jobs in the oil and gas sector, a field with significant demand for skilled welders. Furthermore, he promised ongoing mentorship and support, incorporating the trainees into his wider network of supported individuals. A future workshop, in collaboration with K16 Gals under the guidance of Gloria, is also planned to further assist their development.
The minister’s dedication also included a financial contribution: each graduate received UGX 100,000 for transport home. He also took the opportunity to check on fifteen female trainees from Kinkiizi East currently enrolled in a tailoring and fashion program at UIRI. Dr. Baryomunsi further emphasized his intention to advocate for increased government support for UIRI, ensuring Uganda’s youth are empowered to actively participate in the nation’s productive sectors.
Trainee coordinator Crescent Kasaasira lauded Dr. Baryomunsi as a “gift from God,” expressing profound gratitude for his support and acknowledging the transformative impact of the training. He also thanked Prof. Kwesiga for the guidance provided. The event concluded on a high note, celebrating the success of the trainees and promising a bright future for skilled Ugandan youth.
