CAIRO – Uganda’s Minister of Water and Environment, Hon. Maj Gen (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire, is attending Cairo Water Week 2026 that started on October 25th and will end on October 29th, 2026 in Cairo, Egypt.
Cairo Water Week brings together water-sector leaders, policymakers, experts and development partners from within Africa and the rest of the world to discuss issues regarding sustainable and cooperative management and development of water resources.
The Minister was accompanied by Dr. Callist Tindimugaya, Commissioner for Water Resources Planning and Regulation in the Ministry of Water and Environment and other senior government officials.

The international event provides a platform for participating countries to explore solutions to shared water challenges, including climate change, rising water demand, water security and infrastructure development.
As part of the programme, Uganda participated in a technical session titled “From Cooperation to Impact: Bilateral Water Partnerships for Shared Prosperity in the Nile Basin.”
The session focused on how bilateral partnerships between Egypt and Nile Basin countries can deliver practical results through initiatives such as aquatic weed control, groundwater development, rainwater harvesting, flood forecasting and capacity building.
Through such engagements, participating countries seek to translate diplomatic and technical cooperation into tangible benefits for communities, strengthen institutional capacity and promote shared prosperity throughout the Nile Basin.
In his remarks, the Minister stressed the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening water security, improving livelihoods and building climate resilience across the Nile Basin.
Discussions also explored opportunities to expand successful water projects and strengthen partnerships for sustainable development.
The Minister also participated in another session on key requirements for successful implementation of the Africa Water Vision and Policy. He stressed the importance of country ownership of the vision, institutional and human capacity building, innovative financing and regular monitoring and evaluation among others.
Cairo Water Week 2026 offers Uganda and other participating countries an opportunity to exchange experiences, share solutions, and strengthen collaboration and partnerships towards a more water-secure and sustainable future.
Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Kahinda Otafiire’s participation comes at a time when regional collaboration is increasingly becoming important in addressing water-related challenges affecting communities and economies across the Nile Basin and Africa in general.
