SHEEMA – Members of the Parliamentary Budget Committee have called for a thorough investigation of the Rubaare Sericulture project so as to prove value for money.
Sericulture, or silk farming, is the cultivation of silkworms to produce silk. Silk worms are no longer found in the wild as they have been modified through selective breeding rendering most flightless and with atrophy.
MPs says that after seven years since its inception, the project should have already produced fruits.

The MPs were on their one-day monitoring and oversight inspection of the project at Rubaare Cell,Nyarwenshama ward, Sheema Central division in Sheema municipality where they cited project mismanagement.
In 2017,Sheema District Local government patterned with Uganda National Council of science and technology (UNCST) to establish a sericulture project at Rubaare Farm land where hectares of land were availed by the district officials to UNCST for ten years but since then the project has not been operational sighting inadequate funding from the government.
Rosemary Nyakikongoro, the Sheema district Woman Member of Parliament said that there is no value for money seven years after the government started investing in the project.
Jemimah Buhanda, the Sheema district LC5 chairperson told the committee that the companies which were given contracts to build the factory in 2017 had not been paid.
