Rubirizi,Uganda – Rubirizi Town Council officials have responded to concerns from street vendors affected by the nationwide directive to clear roadside businesses, saying plans are underway to allocate alternative trading spaces and build a public market.
Town Clerk Atwonjire Hono said the council has heard vendors’ concerns about the ban, which aims to beautify the town, reduce congestion, and improve cleanliness. He noted that the directive is nationwide and called for compliance with government laws. “We are trying to see how and where we can help allocate space for affected street vendors to ensure their survival,” he said.
Hono emphasized that leaders are actively seeking government funds to construct a public market in Ndekye, where land is already available. He added that the request has been submitted.

Mayor John Magezi said street vendors in Ndekye and Nyakasharu towns have contributed to increased garbage, urging shared responsibility for cleanliness. “Residents should keep both the town and their homes tidy so people enjoy good health and a decent working environment,” he said. He cautioned against dumping garbage and blocking drainage systems, which he said has forced vendors onto the streets. He encouraged residents to turn waste into manure for gardens and home projects.
Magezi added that the town’s physical planning is complete to ensure all businesses are properly allocated, noting there is sufficient space. The council is consulting physical planning experts on allocating space for traders to build kiosks under formal working agreements. He also advised landowners to develop their plots to earn rental income, citing many traders who lack proper places to operate.
Deputy RDC Robina Mirembe told journalists that domestic violence, school dropouts, and child marriages for bride price are driving people to street vending. She linked these issues to broken marriages and lack of parental support. She appealed to parents to invest in their children’s education as a future source of income.
Mirembe warned that parents who refuse to take children to school, fail to provide basic needs, or marry off underage children for bride price will be arrested and taken to court. “These actions destroy their future,” she said.
