MBARARA, UGANDA – The Mbarara District Police Commander, SP Kenneth Kabwigo Gumisiriza, testified in court yesterday, stating that he has been receiving threats connected to the arrest and detention of 38 National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters. The group has been in custody since their arrest last month and appeared before Grade One Magistrate Alex Baguma for the sixth time.
Kabwigo’s remarks came as the court considered an application for bail filed by the NUP supporters’ lawyers. The state attorneys, Davis Ariho and Jacob Nahurira, opposed the application, arguing that the accused might interfere with evidence and witnesses if released.
The NUP supporters were charged with various offenses, including inciting violence and participating in an unlawful assembly. Their arrest has sparked controversy, with opposition politicians claiming they were targeted for their political views.

In his testimony, Kabwigo emphasized that the threats he received were serious and could compromise the investigation. He urged the court to consider the risks of releasing the suspects, citing concerns for public safety and the integrity of the judicial process.
Magistrate Baguma adjourned the case, citing the need for more time to consider the bail application and the state’s objections.
The development has heightened tensions in Mbarara, with NUP supporters and opposition politicians calling for the immediate release of the detained activists.
