Kasese, Uganda – A growing number of diseases are threatening livestock in Kasese district, with goats being the most affected, followed by sheep and pigs.
According to Dr. Yusuf Kibaya, District Veterinary Officer, the ongoing outbreaks include Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), swine flu, and foot and mouth diseases.
Since June this year, 834 goats have been affected with PPR, with 719 deaths reported. The most affected areas include Bugoye, Kyabarungira, Kitswamba, Maliba, Lake-Katwe, Katwe-Kabatooro, Hina, Mpondwe-Lhubiriha Town Councils, Nyamwamba, and Central Divisions in Kasese Municipality.

The challenge is attributed to low vaccination rates among farmers and the influx of animals from other local governments.
To combat this, Dr. Kibaya advises regular vaccination of animals, restricting introduction of new animals into communities without proper testing, and warning against consuming meat from infected animals to prevent potential health risks. Specifically, he cautions against consuming sanga meat to avoid contracting diseases associated with eating unhealthy meat.
By following these guidelines, the district authorities hope to contain the outbreaks and promote sustainable livestock practices.
End.
