Kanungu,Uganda – The territorial police in Kanungu are investigating the strangulation and murder of 83-year-old Rwakaremera Joseph and the attempted murder of his son, Rwebisengye Swaibu, 18. Both were residents of Kebiremo Cell, Northern Ward, Butogota Town Council, Kanungu District.
According to outgoing Kigezi Police Spokesperson SP Elly Maate, the deceased had been living with his son in the same house.
“On June 2, 2026, at around 8:30 p.m., three unknown men armed with pangas entered their home while they were in the kitchen. Two of the attackers restrained the deceased and strangled him,” SP Maate said.

SP Maate explained that the third suspect grabbed the son, took him to the main house, cut him on the forehead, pushed him under the bed, and guarded him while the others strangled the deceased. All three then fled the scene through a coffee plantation.
The victim later notified his brother, Kayabuki, who reported the matter to Butogota Police Station. Police registered the case, examined and documented the scene, and introduced a sniffer dog. However, the dog could not track effectively as the scene had been tampered with.
The body of the deceased was conveyed to Kanungu Health Centre IV for postmortem examination.
SP Maate said preliminary investigations indicate the deceased had experienced long-term domestic violence with his children and first wife, who resides in Kanyantorogo, over a piece of land.
“In May 2026, the deceased was allegedly assaulted by his children and one grandson. The matter was reported to Kanyantorogo Police Station but was later resolved through reconciliation,” SP Maate added.
Three suspects, identified as the deceased’s children and one grandson, have been arrested to assist with investigations. Inquiries are ongoing.
