Rubrizi, Bushenyi – Rubirizi District Police, part of the Greater Bushenyi Police region, commenced an investigation today, August 31, 2025, into the suspected mob killing of Atwijukire Deo, a 22-year-old resident of Omukabaare B village, Kikumbo parish, Kirugu sub-county in Rubirizi district. The investigation followed a tip-off regarding a suspected lifeless body discovered in a banana plantation within Kikumbo village.
Responding swiftly, police officers attended the scene, secured the crime scene according to standard operating procedures, and transported the body to the mortuary at Rugazi Health Centre. A post-mortem examination will be conducted by medical experts to determine the exact cause of death.
Initial reports from local residents suggest that the deceased, identified as Atwijukire Deo, commonly known as Atari, was a known member of a criminal gang. Residents describe him as a habitual thief with a history of repeated arrests and incarceration, most recently being released from Nyamushekyera prison. These reports indicate that he was likely involved in criminal activities even upon release from prison.

The ongoing police investigation is focused on establishing the full sequence of events leading up to the death. Police are currently interviewing witnesses and gathering evidence to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the death.
In a statement issued by Greater Bushenyi Police Spokesperson, Superintendent Apollo Tayebwa, the police unequivocally condemned mob justice. Superintendent Tayebwa emphasized that while individuals have a responsibility to report criminal activity, they do not have the authority to take the law into their own hands. He reiterated that evidence of crime should be presented to law enforcement authorities, who are tasked with investigating and prosecuting offenders appropriately.
“We urge members of the public to uphold the rule of law and report any suspected criminal activity to the police. Mob justice is unacceptable and will not be tolerated,” stated Superintendent Tayebwa. “While we understand the frustration and concern that community members may feel in such situations, the appropriate course of action is always to report such matters to the police.”
The investigation is ongoing, and the police pledge to keep the public updated as further details emerge.
End.
