MBARARA- The Mbarara District Woman Member of Parliament Ayebare Margaret Rwebyambu has called on government to implement eco-friendly cooking methods for students in schools.
Rwebyambu raised the concern during a plenary session, noting that she conducted a pilot study in many secondary schools across the district but her findings indicate that most of the schools use firewood for cooking meals, and, on average, each student contributes to the destruction of a tree every day.
Rwebyambu questioned what plans the government has for these schools in terms of environmental restoration and addressing climate change.

She mentioned that the government, through the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, should provide fixed energy saving stoves as a short-term solution, and that the Prime Minister should develop a long-term plan for schools.
In her response, Prime Minister Rhobinah Nabbanja disclosed that the government is already planning to implement modern solutions to address the issue of firewood usage in schools.
