Kampala,Uganda – The Government of Uganda has initiated significant governance changes at Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited, following a comprehensive review of the company’s management and operations.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, the government confirmed the termination of the Board Chairperson’s services and the decision to place the Managing Director on forced leave. The move is intended to pave the way for a thorough assessment of the company’s leadership and operational efficiency.
According to the statement, the changes are part of broader efforts to strengthen governance, accountability, and service delivery within Uganda’s energy sector. The Ministry emphasized that the review is a routine oversight measure aimed at improving institutional performance rather than a response to any single incident.

To ensure continuity and stability in electricity distribution services, shareholders have appointed an interim Board Chairperson. An Acting Managing Director has also been named to oversee UEDCL’s day-to-day operations during the transition period. The interim arrangements will remain in place until substantive appointments are made.
Minister for Energy and Mineral Development Ruth Nankabirwa Ssentamu reassured the public that electricity supply across the country will not be disrupted by the leadership changes. She stressed that maintaining uninterrupted service delivery remains a top priority for the government.
“The public and all stakeholders are assured that electricity supply and distribution services will continue uninterrupted during this period,” the statement read, underscoring the government’s commitment to stability in the energy sector.
The Ministry called for patience and cooperation from stakeholders as reforms are implemented. Officials believe the governance measures will ultimately enhance operational effectiveness at UEDCL and improve service delivery nationwide.
UEDCL plays a critical role in Uganda’s electricity distribution network, making the reforms a matter of national importance. Analysts say the government’s intervention signals a renewed focus on efficiency and transparency in state-owned enterprises.
The developments come as Uganda seeks to expand electricity access and improve reliability to support economic growth and industrialization.
