Bushenyi, Uganda – Kemigisha Vianah Kashaya, a youthful politician, has announced her independent candidacy for the Bushenyi Woman Member of Parliament seat in the 2026-2031 elections. This decision follows her contested loss in the July 17, 2025, National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries, where she alleges widespread vote rigging.
Kashaya, a resident of Kashanda in Kakanju Sub-County, Igara West, claims she won the NRM primaries but that the results were manipulated in favor of the incumbent, Hon. Katusiime Annet Mugisha. She presented evidence from various polling stations in areas including Kyabugimbi, Kyamuhunga, Ruhumuro, and Kakanju, as well as the municipality, showing significantly higher vote counts for herself than those officially reported by the NRM. These discrepancies, she argues, highlight a lack of transparency within the party’s electoral process.
In a radio interview on BFM Radio on Friday, July 18, 2025, Kashaya detailed her refusal to sign the NRM primary declaration forms, citing the alleged fraud. She accused NRM officials of cheating in broad daylight and expressed deep disappointment in the party’s handling of the election process. Kashaya’s statement strongly implied that the NRM primaries were not free and fair, prompting her decision to pursue an independent path.

Addressing her supporters, Kashaya thanked them for their unwavering support during the primaries and formally announced her independent candidacy. She directly challenges the incumbent, Hon. Katusiime Annet Mugisha, who is facing criticism for perceived underperformance, alleged neglect of constituents’ needs, and accusations of presenting herself as unaccountable to the people of Bushenyi. Kashaya’s campaign is likely to focus on this contrast, presenting herself as a more responsive and accessible representative for the district. The upcoming election promises to be a closely contested race.
