Buhweju, Uganda – The political race for Woman Member of Parliament in Buhweju District is intensifying, with candidates holding joint campaigns.
Incumbent Hon. Oliver Katwesigye Koyechenga is facing scrutiny following a viral video showing him slapping the Rubengye Sub-County NRM Registrar, sparking debate about the politician’s conduct. The disagreement centered on the campaign roadmap.

Another candidate, Nnamara Annet Oyes Byamukama, Chairperson of Gender Affairs for Buhweju Community Transformation Initiative (BCTI), is also vying for the seat. Natukunda Ameria Kantona is the third candidate.

Campaigns resumed on Friday, July 4, 2025, after a closed-door meeting between candidates and security officials. The meeting followed a temporary suspension due to candidates’ non-compliance with campaign guidelines and reported incidents of violence, particularly against supporters of Annet Oyes Byamukama.
Friday’s campaigns, held in Buhunga and Bitsya Sub-counties, were cut short due to time constraints. Campaigning will continue in other areas of Bitsya Sub-county on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Preliminary polls suggest a strong lead for Annet Oyes Byamukama, with an estimated 60% chance of victory. Hon. Koyechenga is projected to receive around 30% of the vote, while Natukunda Ameria Kantona is predicted to garner 10%.
The National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries are scheduled for July 17, 2025, according to the party’s Electoral Commission.
