BUHWEJU DISTRICT
Buhweju District has officially flagged off a group of school-going learners who will represent the district in national scouting and sports activities, marking another step in the district’s efforts to promote co-curricular activities, talent development and holistic education.
The teams were flagged off on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at about 7:45 a.m. at the Buhweju District Headquarters.

The delegation comprised scouts travelling to the Kazi National Camp Site and young athletes heading to Mubende District for the National Ball Championship.
The scouts were led by the Head Teacher of Karungu Primary School, Ntakyi Hesty, and included learners drawn from both primary and secondary schools in Buhweju District.
Among the sports teams flagged off were girls’ netball team in the Under-14 and boy’s netball team Under-12 categories, as well as a volleyball team, among other participating athletes.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by Hon. Kasande Florence, Secretary for Social Services; Ven. Retired Rev. Can. James Karisa; Gabaami Fred James, District Education Officer; Mujuni Joseph, Head Teacher and Chairperson of the Buhweju District Athletics Association (BDAA); and Ms. Tumusiime Ruth, Buhweju District Sports Officer.

Speaking during the flag-off, District Education Officer Gabaami Fred James wished the learners a safe journey and successful participation in their respective activities.
«we wish you journey mercies and success upon the activities of involvement,” Gabaami said.
The district’s participation comes at a time when the Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) continues to emphasize the importance of physical education and sports in Uganda’s education system. The Ministry’s Physical Education and Sports Department is mandated to coordinate, promote and develop physical education and sports, including supporting talent identification and age-appropriate sporting activities among learners.
The Ministry has also highlighted grassroots sports scouting as an important pathway for identifying and nurturing young talent, particularly through schools where learners can develop sporting skills from an early age.
For Buhweju, the participation of learners from different schools provides an opportunity for young people to gain experience beyond the classroom while developing teamwork, discipline, leadership, confidence and competitive skills.
The scouts are expected to participate in activities at the Kazi National Camp Site, while the sports teams will proceed to Mubende District to compete against teams from other parts of Uganda in the National Ball Championship.
District officials have urged the learners to maintain discipline, respect their coaches, officials and fellow participants, and uphold the good image of Buhweju throughout their stay at the respective venues.
The participation is expected to provide Buhweju learners with valuable exposure and an opportunity to test their abilities against competitors from other districts, while potentially identifying talents that can progress to higher levels of competition.
