BUHWEJU, UGANDA – A controversy is brewing in Buhweju district, where independent candidate Ameria Kantona has accused the NRM District Executive Committee (DEC) of embezzling Shs.300 million earmarked for voter transportation to a Presidential Candidate/President rally in Engaju Subcounty, Marinde. However, the authenticity of these allegations has not been verified.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is mandated to ensure compliance with electoral laws and regulations, including Section 67 of the Electoral Commission Act, 1997, which prohibits electoral malpractices such as bribery and undue influence. The NRM party’s code of conduct, Article 5, also emphasizes the importance of integrity and transparency in electoral processes.
Kantona’s credibility has been questioned due to her past employment history, with her tenure at Buhweju tea factory and Uganda Investment Authority reportedly ending due to conduct-related issues.

If proven, the allegations may constitute an offense under Section 54 of the Electoral Commission Act, 1997. The EC is expected to investigate and take necessary action, while the NRM party must address these claims to maintain public trust.
