RUBIRIZI,UGANDA – Katerera Comprehensive High School in partnership with Katerera Town Council has launched a campaign to clean Katerera Town through garbage collection, bush clearing, plastic bottle picking, and tree planting aimed at conserving the environment and improving the town’s image.
According to Mushangye Charles, Director of Katerera Comprehensive High School, the school decided to plant trees across the town as part of its corporate social responsibility. He said a clean and green environment attracts businesses and improves the health of residents.
This initiative comes as the school prepares to celebrate 25 years of providing education services to the community. The campaign targets making Katerera Town clean, green, and attractive. Trees will also provide shade for residents during the hot season and help the town match standards of other developed towns in the district.
Mushangye emphasized that environmental conservation is important because trees provide shade, clean air and oxygen for human survival.
Madam Nyangoma Ruth, Physical Planner for Katerera Town Council, appealed to residents to protect the trees and take responsibility for looking after them until they grow. She noted that the Town Council previously spent 4 million shillings on planting trees. However, some residents tied animals on the trees while others cut them down, leaving the town dry and less attractive.
Mr. Ambrose, Headteacher of Katerera Comprehensive High School, said such initiatives help learners practice patriotism, discipline and service to the community while keeping their town clean and attractive. He promised to continue working closely with town council authorities to sustain the campaign and plant more trees in different parts of Katerera.
Local leaders led by Hon. Kyakimwa Meresi, Area Councillor Katerera Town Council, and Anet Ahimbisibwe, LC1 Chairperson Katerera Town, commended the school for volunteering to serve the community. They urged residents to support the campaign by protecting planted trees and keeping the town clean. Leaders pledged to continue with regular clean-up exercises and tree planting to ensure Katerera Town becomes a model town in environmental conservation and called on other institutions to emulate the school.
