Kampala, Uganda – June 25, 2026
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Hon. John Chrysostom Muyingo as the Acting Minister of Education and Sports, according to a press release issued by the Presidential Press Unit (PPU) on Thursday.
The appointment was made under the powers vested in the President by Article 99(1) of the Constitution of the Republic of Uganda, which grants the Head of State executive authority to make appointments and oversee government functions.

According to the statement, Hon. Muyingo will assume the responsibilities of the Ministry of Education and Sports in the absence of a substantive minister. The appointment takes effect immediately.
Hon. Muyingo, who has previously served in key education leadership positions, is expected to oversee the ministry’s operations during a critical period as the sector continues to implement government education policies, supervise national examinations, and coordinate sports development programmes across the country.
The appointment comes at a time when the education sector remains central to government efforts aimed at improving learning outcomes, enhancing school infrastructure, and expanding access to quality education. Stakeholders are also closely monitoring ongoing reforms in curriculum implementation, teacher development, and vocational training.
While the State House statement did not specify the duration of the acting appointment or the circumstances surrounding the absence of a substantive minister, the move ensures continuity in leadership and administration within one of Uganda’s most important ministries.
The Ministry of Education and Sports is responsible for formulating and implementing policies on education, training, youth development, and sports, making the appointment significant for the management of the sector.
Government officials have indicated that Hon. Muyingo’s appointment takes immediate effect as he assumes the duties and responsibilities of the office pending further guidance from the President.
