Kebisoni,Rukungiri – Police in Rukungiri District are investigating the death of 10-year-old Gumisiriza Benedicto, a pupil at Mutariga Primary School, who was found dead in a suspected suicide by hanging on Thursday evening.
Benedicto, a resident of Nyamubogore Cell, Nyeibingo Parish in Kebisoni Sub-county, was discovered hanging from a coffee plant with a banana fiber by his elder sister, Nduhukire Ruth, at around 9:00 p.m.
According to preliminary reports, the incident unfolded on 8th May 2026. At about 2:00 p.m., the child reportedly locked his bedroom door from inside and left through the window to an unknown location. He returned home around 7:30 p.m. When his mother, Kentaro Evelyn, asked where he had been, he did not respond and ran off. He was found dead about 90 minutes later.
The mother alerted area police after being notified by the sister. Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident, saying the District Police Commander and a team visited the scene, recorded statements from witnesses, and handed the body to relatives for burial.
Inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death are ongoing.
