NTUNGAMO, UGANDA – Independent candidates in Ntungamo district affiliated with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) have been urged to withdraw their candidacies and rally behind official NRM flag bearers in the upcoming general elections. The move, leaders said, is critical for securing a landslide victory for both the party’s parliamentary candidates and President Museveni.
The appeal was made on Tuesday, 18th November 2025, by Maj. General Wilis Byarugaba, chairperson of the Ntungamo Veterans League, during an NRM stakeholders’ and religious leaders’ meeting. The meeting, held at the Ntungamo NRM offices, was part of preparations for President Museveni’s campaign rally in the district scheduled for 27th November 2025.
“I appeal to all independent candidates in Ntungamo who lean towards NRM to withdraw and rally behind the NRM flag bearers,” Maj. Byarugaba said. He warned that if these independent candidates continue their campaigns, it could undermine efforts to mobilize votes for President Museveni.

The meeting brought together incumbent NRM MPs, flag bearers, party chairpersons from various administrative units, religious leaders, civil servants, and NRM mobilizers. Committees were formed to coordinate campaign preparations and ensure a grand reception for President Museveni, including the transportation of supporters from across the district to the rally.
Hon. Yona Musinguzi, NRM vice chairperson and flag bearer for Ntungamo Municipality—also the incumbent Member of Parliament—urged attendees to work tirelessly to secure a landslide win for President Museveni in the forthcoming elections.
Reinforcing this call, Mr. Seezi Rukurungu, Private Secretary from the office of the First Lady, Janet Kataaha Museveni, emphasized that Ntungamo, as President Museveni’s home district, should lead in delivering overwhelming support during the polls.
