Opinion- The recently concluded National Resistance Movement (NRM) primary elections have left many candidates and supporters deeply disillusioned. As a participant in the 2021 NRM primaries, I am compelled to share my firsthand experience and explain my decision to run as an independent candidate in the 2026 general elections.
**The Primary Elections: A Flawed System**
The NRM primary elections, like many before them, were marred by irregularities, a lack of transparency, and a blatant disregard for the fundamental civic rights enshrined in our constitution. I witnessed firsthand the manipulation of results, widespread voter bribery, and the preferential treatment afforded to certain candidates.

**My Experience: A Rigged System**
Entering the primaries, I held high hopes for a fair process. However, the system was rigged from the outset. Despite my team’s dedicated efforts to mobilize support and engage with voters, we were consistently undermined by the actions of other candidates backed by wealthy patrons. These candidates employed tactics of blatant voter bribery, distributing money, cheap handouts (waragi, soap, posho, rice, etc.), effectively buying votes and ensuring a predetermined outcome.
**The Corrosive Effects of Voter Bribery**
Voter bribery has devastating consequences for our democracy:
1. **Undermining Electoral Integrity:** Bribery compromises the fairness and legitimacy of the electoral process, rendering the results meaningless.
2. **Distorting Voter Choice:** Voters are incentivized to prioritize personal gain over a candidate’s qualifications or policies, undermining the principles of informed consent.
3. **Eroding Trust in Institutions:** Widespread vote buying fosters disillusionment with democratic institutions, leading to decreased voter turnout and apathy.
These consequences extend beyond the immediate election:
* **Impact on Performance:** Bribery often leads to the election of incompetent leaders lacking the skills and qualifications necessary to govern effectively. This results in a lack of accountability, poor decision-making, and ultimately, ineffective governance.
* **Impact on Service Delivery:** Elected officials who owe their positions to bribery prioritize personal gain and the interests of their allies over the needs of their constituents. This leads to inefficient resource allocation, corruption, mismanagement, and ultimately, poor service delivery, further eroding public trust.
* **Long-Term Consequences:** Repeated instances of vote buying can destabilize democratic systems, paving the way for authoritarianism, economic stagnation, and social unrest.
**Why I’m Running as an Independent**
Given the deeply flawed primary process, I have chosen to run as an independent candidate for Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality. This decision was not made lightly. I believe it is essential to offer the people of Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality (BIM) a genuine choice and to challenge the status quo dominated by wealthy candidates who have bought their way into parliament, sidelining capable and dedicated leaders.
**The Path Forward**
As an independent candidate, I am committed to issues-based politics, direct engagement with voters, and promoting transparency and accountability. I urge the residents of BIM to join me in this journey to demand better services and build a brighter future for our municipality. The NRM primary elections represented a missed opportunity, but I remain hopeful that the people of BIM will transcend party affiliations and demand better leadership. I look forward to serving the people of BIM as an independent candidate.
