Kabale, Uganda – A search and rescue operation is underway on Lake Bunyonyi following a tragic canoe capsize on April 15, 2025, that resulted in the deaths of two people. While three individuals managed to swim to shore, two others remain missing.
The incident occurred around 7:00 am at the Musingwe and Katooma border on the lake, when heavy rain and waves caused the canoe to capsize. Authorities received a report from Afrika Elly, a resident of Muhinga village, Kitumba subcounty, on April 16, 2025.
The missing victims are identified as Nyabukyerera Jennipher, 70, a resident of Rubanda and Medius Ngyenda, whose gender and further details are yet to be confirmed.

Police Marine officers immediately responded to the scene, assisted by local leaders. Despite their efforts, the search for the missing individuals continues. A case file has been opened to investigate the incident, and witness statements have been recorded.
“While our deepest condolences go out to the families of those who lost their lives, we want to emphasize the importance of safety precautions on Lake Bunyonyi,” stated ASP Maate Elly, Police Spokesperson for the Kigezi region. “We urge all those who use the lake to prioritize safety. Wearing life jackets or using items like filled jerrycans with lead weights can drastically increase the chance of survival in the event of an incident.”
The search for the two missing victims continues. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information regarding their whereabouts to come forward.
