Police say that at around 10:00 p.m. on 20th April, while students were revising in class, the teacher on duty found six boys hiding in the dormitory. They were taken to the staffroom for punishment, which angered them and they began shouting. Teachers locked the students in the staffroom and went to calm others, but the students started throwing stones, forcing teachers to flee for safety.
The students then broke into the bursar’s office and stole cash and uniforms. They also broke into the school canteen, stealing cash, food, and drinks. They vandalized windows, doors, tables, chairs, and desks. Some cut down neighbors’ banana plantations while others ate sugarcane.
The headteacher alerted the DPC by phone after the situation escalated. Police officers responded and calmed the situation.
This morning, the DPC, DEO, Inspector of Schools, District CIID Officer, parents, and others met with administrators and student leaders. Participants in the strike were identified and arrested. The school has been closed, and students were warned against further involvement in strikes.
Inquiries are ongoing.
