BUSHENYI, UGANDA – The January 2026 election is shaping up to be a fierce battle, with Nyamunyonyi challenging Katusiime’s NRM party flagbearership after claiming the primaries were marred by irregularities. Supporters of both candidates have clashed, with some arrested and posters defaced, adding to the tension.
Katusiime, who ousted the late Mary Karooro Okurut in the 2020 NRM primaries, is seeking re-election, but her chances are uncertain.
Nyamunyonyi’s decision to run as an independent has intensified the competition, while a third candidate, Namara Caroline, is also gaining traction in areas like Kyamuhunga and Ruhumuro.

The presidential visit to Bushenyi has further heightened tensions, with Nyamunyonyi’s supporters complaining of intimidation. As the election draws near, the stakes are high, and the outcome is far from certain.
