Mitooma, Uganda – Mitooma District Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Agasha Juliet Bashiisha, has challenged women in her constituency to cultivate a savings culture to achieve financial independence.
Hon. Bashiisha observed that consistent saving would significantly ease the burden of meeting family needs, including school fees, food, and medical bills.
She delivered this message during a one-day “Women and Leadership Training” held at Peak Hotel, Mitooma, on Monday, June 30th, 2025. The training brought together approximately 172 women, comprising local leaders (councilors and chairpersons from all 77 parishes), 95 women’s group representatives, and newly elected NRM women leaders from Mitooma District.

Professor Sarah Ssali of Makerere University led the training, focusing on various aspects of the “Gender Equality Project.” These included domestic violence prevention, the importance of saving and educating children, fostering family cooperation, and productive income utilization.

Hon. Bashiisha expressed gratitude to President Museveni for the Parish Development Model (PDM) funds, citing positive testimonies from women who have used the funds productively. She further urged participants to educate their children—boys and girls equally—for a sustainable future.

Participants praised Hon. Bashiisha for organizing the training, with support from Deputy Speaker Rt. Hon. Thomas Tayebwa. They pledged to share their newly acquired knowledge to foster peaceful and stable families.
Namata Annah, Woman District Councilor for Kanyabwanga and Kigyende Sub-Counties, encouraged fellow women to utilize their newfound knowledge to establish small income-generating projects like piggery and poultry farming.
Tumuhimbise Evangelista, Councilor for Kaburara, echoed this sentiment, adding the importance of parental career guidance to raise responsible adults and avoid alcohol-related domestic violence stemming from financial disparities and poverty.
Tumubirwe Dinah from Mahwizi Parish suggested that future trainings should include men to ensure widespread knowledge sharing and impact within families.
End.
