Ntungamo, Uganda – A prominent Rushenyi resident has urged regional leaders to embrace a new politics prioritizing peace, substance, and service over divisive rhetoric and self-interest. This appeal follows recent controversy surrounding comments made by former Minister and Member of Parliament for Rushenyi, Hon. Mwesigwa Rukutana, on a WhatsApp platform.
Rukutana’s derogatory remarks targeting fellow Rushenyi resident Kaana Rwamuteba have drawn widespread concern and disappointment. While acknowledging Rukutana’s past contributions to Uganda’s public life, the resident described the recent comments as “painful and pitiful,” highlighting their negative influence on younger leaders and the dignity of the Rushenyi community. The resident questioned the example set by such behavior from respected elders, asking, “If our leaders speak this way in public, what example are we left to follow?”
In contrast, the resident praised Hon. Naome Kabasharira, Rushenyi’s elected leader, urging constituents to support her in fulfilling her mandate and urging that she receive the respect afforded to all elected officials.

This call for a shift in political culture emphasizes the need for civility, transparency, accountability, and integrity in Rushenyi’s leadership. The resident stated, “Let us prove that Rushenyi can be known for more than political tension. Let us be a beacon of hope, modeling a new kind of leadership that values peace, substance, and service.”
Concluding with the African proverb, “When the roots are deep, there is no reason to fear the wind,” the resident emphasized the need for leaders to protect the community’s strong foundations from the destructive forces of bitterness and instead embrace a more constructive leadership style.
The appeal has reignited calls for leaders to prioritize the needs and dignity of their constituents. As Rushenyi looks towards the future, residents hope for a new political landscape characterized by peace, substance, and selfless service.
