KAMPALA – The Woman Member of Parliament for Rubirizi District, *Hon. Arineitwe Jeniva Nalongo*, has raised serious concerns about the increasing cases of human rights violations in communities across the country.
Hon. Nalongo made the remarks during the induction training of the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights held at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala.
According to Hon. Nalongo, many people in communities are being oppressed, denied justice and suffering human rights abuses, yet government institutions and security agencies continue to look on without taking decisive action.

> “As a leader, I have decided to stand firm and fight for the rights of my people of Rubirizi to ensure they get justice and fairness,” Hon. Jeniva Nalongo said.
The induction training has brought together members of the Human Rights Committee, legal experts, and key facilitators including *Hon. Norbert Mao*, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, *Attorney General Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka represented by Hon. Mayanja Sam*, *Hon. Wilson Kajwengye* the Committee Chairperson, *Her Ladyship Mariam Wangadya*, Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), and other human rights experts. The training is aimed at equipping new MPs with skills and knowledge on their mandate.
According to Hon. Jeniva Nalongo, the training is timely and important because it equips Members of Parliament with knowledge on the Constitutional and International Human Rights Framework, handling petitions and complaints on human rights violations, oversight of places of detention, protection of vulnerable groups like women, children, persons with disabilities and refugees, and integration of human rights in lawmaking and budget appropriation.
She emphasized that as a representative from Rubirizi, she will use her position on the committee to advocate for justice, equality, and protection of human rights for people at the grassroots, ensuring that the voice of the ordinary person in the community is heard.
Hon. Nalongo told the Human Rights Committee that her coming from a rural district like Rubirizi has opened her eyes to the real human rights challenges faced by ordinary people, including land wrangles, injustices, Gender-Based Violence (GBV), mistreatment in detention and denial of services.
She pledged to be a strong voice for the voiceless to ensure that human rights are respected from the village to the national level.
The committee is expected to play a key role in ensuring government upholds human rights, promotes accountability, and ensures every Ugandan lives with dignity and fairness.
