Rubirizi,Uganda – Residents of Rubirizi District have been urged to protect and preserve their natural and cultural heritage.
The call was made by Chief Administrative Officer Paul Samuel during an event organized by Crater Pearls Adventures after a guided tour of crater lakes and surrounding hills. The event promoted tourism as a sustainable way to conserve the environment ahead of the upcoming Crater Rift Valley Run scheduled for 25th July 2026.
Leaders and tourism stakeholders raised concern over increasing degradation of natural resources, especially pollution of lakes from dumping plastic bottles and other waste. They also warned against excessive and unregulated use of lake water, which threatens sustainability.

Speakers including private lecturer Marcel, tourism officer Mucunguzi Didas, and Byamukama Dominic stressed community responsibility in protecting these vital resources.
The CAO was later awarded a shield in recognition of his commitment to promoting environmental conservation in Rubirizi District.
Rubirizi continues to stand out as a tourism destination, blessed with unique attractions such as crater lakes, rolling hills, and scenic landscapes.
Key crater lakes in the district, including Kabarogyi, Nkugute, Karuya, Kako, and Bugwagyi, remain major sources of domestic water for surrounding communities.
