RUBIRIZI, UGANDA – Rubirizi District Local Government has donated over 2,000 Grevellia tree seedlings to Rukoma Farming Cooperative Society Limited. The gesture aims to combat soil erosion, mitigate the effects of wind on crops, and promote sustainable environmental conservation practices.
During the handover ceremony in Rukoma Village, Katerera Sub-county, District Environment Officer Mr. Agaba Agrey emphasized the importance of increasing tree cover in the district. “Tree planting is one of the most effective ways to mitigate the effects of climate change,” he said. “By planting these Grevellia seedlings, we are not only protecting crops from wind damage but also improving soil fertility and ensuring long-term sustainability for our farmers.”
The seedlings will target over 350 acres of farmland affected by heavy winds and soil erosion. Mr. Agaba called upon the community to embrace tree planting beyond this project, stressing that environmental conservation is a shared responsibility.

Farmers’ Hope Restored:
For many farmers in Rukoma and neighboring villages, strong winds have been a recurring challenge, destroying crops and threatening livelihoods. The donation of seedlings comes as a source of hope. Mr. Mikyo Feonest, General Manager for Rukoma, praised the district for the initiative and pledged to mobilize farmers to take good care of the trees.
Community Benefits:
The trees will provide shade, firewood, and protection from wind, improving crop yields and livelihoods. Hon. Mujurizi Daphine, Lady Councilor for Katerera Parish, encouraged the community to integrate tree planting into their daily lives, stressing that environmental conservation begins at home.
A Broader Campaign:
Rubirizi District faces increasing threats from climate change, deforestation, and unsustainable land use practices. The donation to Rukoma Farming Cooperative is part of a broader campaign to restore degraded areas, promote agroforestry, and empower communities to adapt to climate change.
