Magambo, Rubirizi – RIPA has handed over 14 cows and 20 goats to farmers in Rubirizi District, bringing the total number of livestock distributed to 200 households as part of its zero-grazing program aimed at boosting household incomes and reducing poverty.
The animals were handed over by RIPA founders, board members, religious leaders, and local leaders at a Thanksgiving mass held at the organization’s head office in Ryekibagane Village, Magambo Sub-county. Beneficiaries were selected to strengthen household-level farming and improve food security.
Since launching operations in Rubirizi two years ago, RIPA has distributed 100 goats and 40 cows. Last year alone, the organization supported farmers with over 74 goats and 20 cows. Each household receives 2 goats and 1 cow under the program. The current target is to reach over 500 households with livestock through controlled zero-grazing, which allows farmers to raise animals on less land while improving milk and meat production.

RIPA Executive Director Bamugaya Vincent said the organization’s aim is to support farmers with livestock, crop farming, poultry, and backyard vegetable growing to fight poverty at the household level. He urged farmers to embrace modern agricultural practices, value addition, and a mindset shift to increase production for sustainable development.
Project Coordinator Lion Kwesiga Rosebel Akiki outlined RIPA’s focus on five pillars: production; value addition, processing and marketing; strategic alliances; micro savings and credit; and research and environmental conservation. She said over 200 farmers have been trained in zero-grazing, dairy farming, pasture establishment, and goat rearing. Nearly 5,000 people are expected to benefit, with 1,000 youth targeted for vocational training to create sustainable incomes.
RIPA has also expanded beyond livestock to include poultry distribution, kitchen gardening, farmer training, and market linkages to help households secure food and find buyers for their produce.
RIPA Board Vice Chairperson Kobusingye Judith Lutaro said the organization’s mission is to promote economically and socially empowered communities.
Rubirizi Assistant Chief Administrative Officer Nshekanabo Amidu Kaunya praised RIPA for complementing government efforts by providing livestock, seeds, and practical training. He urged residents to embrace commercial farming, take care of the animals, and support neighbors to spread the impact across the district.
Reverend Father Arinitwe Aventino of Rugazi Catholic Parish commended the Bamugaya family for using their resources to uplift vulnerable families and foster unity through work and prayer.
Beneficiaries Turyahebwa Inocent, Kyarisima Agnes, and Nkesiga Jane said the livestock had improved household incomes, reduced hunger and domestic violence, and enabled them to send children to school, produce milk for home use and sale, and use manure to improve farming.
