IBANDA— The Presidential Advisory Committee on Exports and Industrial Development – PACEID has called for sports to remain a unifying platform for young people, free from political divisions and interests.
The call comes after the conclusion of the Ankole Cup, a regional football competition that brought together teams from different districts across the Ankole sub-region, with Ibanda District eventually emerging as champions.
Speaking during a media engagement, Mr. Kagonyera Francis emphasized the importance of supporting young people to develop their talents without allowing political differences to interfere with sporting activities.

He noted that competitions such as the Ankole Cup should bring communities together, promote teamwork and give young people an opportunity to showcase their abilities.
Mr. Odrek Rwabwogo, the Chairman of PACEID, supported the Ibanda District team with Shs14 million towards its participation in the tournament. The contribution was welcomed by the team and local leaders as an example of the support needed to help young people pursue their ambitions.
Kabuye Nickson said sports can play a significant role in empowering young people, creating opportunities and strengthening unity among communities.
The committee has therefore encouraged leaders, parents, the private sector and other stakeholders to focus on developing talent rather than using sporting platforms for political disagreements.
The success of the Ankole Cup has renewed calls for greater investment in grassroots sports, with stakeholders urging communities to give young talent the support and space they need to grow.
As Ibanda celebrates its victory, the tournament has also highlighted a broader message: sports should unite people, nurture talent and create opportunities, not become another battleground for politics.
