HOIMA, UGANDA — The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has intensified efforts to strengthen water supply infrastructure in Hoima ahead of major national events, including the upcoming AFCON Qualifiers.
A team from the Planning and Capital Development (P&CD) Division, led by the Director of Infrastructure Planning and Development, Eng. Denis Taremwa, on Tuesday conducted a comprehensive field assessment of existing water sources and infrastructure in Hoima.

The team inspected the Kyarwiru Borehole, with a production capacity of 15 cubic meters per hour, and the Mparo Borehole, producing 25 cubic meters per hour. Both sources feed into the 162 cubic meter Kyamwiru Reservoir, which supplies Hoima City Stadium, Kichwamba and Bwikya wards and surrounding areas.
They also inspected the Kyarwabuyamba Water Treatment Plant (Hoima 1), whose production capacity has been upgraded from 3,000 to 6,000 cubic meters per day.
The team further assessed the ongoing Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project (Hoima 2), which is aimed at bridging the demand-supply gap in preparation for the AFCON Qualifiers.
Key components of the Hoima Emergency Water Supply Project include an intake at Kabale on River Rafu, a 300 cubic meter per day Water Treatment Plant at Rwoga, a 300 cubic meter reservoir at Musaja Mukuru with a distribution main to Kabalega Airport, raw and treated water pumping mains, and a distribution system to Hoima City.
A monthly on-site meeting was also held between NWSC and the contracting team from ZhongHao Overseas Construction Company, led by Mr. Wang, to review project progress, pending procurements, modifications and site observations.
Eng. Taremwa commended the contractor for the progress made so far, while urging the team to maximize the available working days, particularly during the rainy season, to accelerate implementation.
He noted that the NWSC Board of Directors is expected to visit the project site in a fortnight, and urged the contracting team to ensure all project particulars are up to date and outstanding issues are addressed ahead of the visit.
The contractor reported 28 percent completion, with an anticipated increase to about 40 percent by the next monthly meeting scheduled for 29th October 2026.
The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning by March 2027.
NWSC says it remains committed to investing in resilient water infrastructure to meet the growing needs of communities and support Uganda’s hosting of major sporting events.
