MBALE, UGANDA – The Mbale Water Supply and Sanitation Project, being implemented by the Government of Uganda through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), has reached 97 percent physical completion, with testing and commissioning now underway
This follows a two-day monitoring mission and monthly progress review that brought together the consultant, the contractor, and NWSC’s project and area teams to assess progress and prepare for final handover.

The team inspected key components, including the Namatala-Bungokho pipeline, Musola Reservoir, Bungokho Water Treatment Plant, and Manafwa Water Treatment Plant.

According to the progress report, most components are substantially complete. The IUIU sewerage network, sewer rehabilitation works, Busoba Reservoir, public sanitation facilities, and distribution lines have all reached 100 percent completion, while Namatala Water Treatment Plant stands at 98 percent and Manafwa Water Treatment Plant at 93.3 percent.

The remaining works are largely finishing, testing, and snag closure. At Manafwa Water Treatment Plant, this includes pipe and pump testing, water-tightness tests, and minor finishing works.

Stakeholders have agreed to conduct a joint inspection before the final handover. Once commissioned, the project is expected to significantly improve access to safe water and sanitation in Mbale City and surrounding towns.
