Rubirizi,Uganda – Katunguru Health Centre III has been named the top-performing and most improved health facility in Rubirizi District for service delivery over the past year.
The recognition was conferred during an award ceremony held yesterday at Katunguru Health Centre III headquarters.
Rubirizi District Health Officer Dr. Aidah Nankynga said health workers and local leaders are routinely recognized with certificates to motivate continued excellence, sharpen performance evaluation, and strengthen leadership. She pledged more capacity-building workshops for health workers to further raise standards across the district.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Mbusa James, the In-Charge of Katunguru Health Centre III, credited the facility’s success to teamwork, discipline, commitment, hard work, respect, and professionalism. “These values enabled us to perform well last year. We pledge to keep improving service delivery to our patients,” he said.
He noted that although Katunguru Sub-county is relatively prosperous, health workers partnered with local leaders to mobilize residents, especially fishermen and traders, to utilize government health services and prioritize their well-being.
Mr. Mpola Justus, one of the staff recognized for outstanding improvement, thanked the Government of Uganda and the Rubirizi District Health Department for building their capacity and supporting their work. “Good leadership, time management, and committed staff helped us improve performance. We focused on teamwork, customer care, and open communication with patients,” he said.
Mpola highlighted that Katunguru HC III expanded its reach through community outreaches that educate residents on healthy living and disease prevention. The strategy has drawn more people back to the facility for care. Currently, the health centre manages over 75 HIV-positive patients monthly, admits more than 30 patients, and conducts over 5 deliveries each week.
Despite the gains, staff cited lingering challenges. Some fishermen and traders still avoid seeking treatment, and the facility continues to rebuild trust after past cases of poor staff attitude toward patients. The team urged the community to seek care early and have confidence in the services offered.
Meanwhile, Mr. Kabagambe Gonzaga, Chairperson of Katunguru Village, commended government for bringing health services closer to the lakeside community. He said fishermen and traders on Lakes Edward and George face frequent illnesses and accidents, and the health centre has been vital. “Our health centre has helped us a lot by providing first aid kits and timely care,” he said. He thanked Katunguru health workers and the District Health Department for ensuring the community accesses government services without frustration.
Kabagambe called on fellow leaders and residents to continue visiting the facility for regular check-ups and asked government to expand the centre’s infrastructure to meet growing demand.
