Bushenyi,Uganda – Residents of Kakanju Sub-county and Bushenyi District turned out in large numbers on Friday, 24th April 2026, as the district belatedly celebrated International Women’s Day at Kakanju Primary School playground.
Unlike previous celebrations held in the municipality, organizers chose Kakanju this year to bring the event closer to rural communities.
The celebrations followed this year’s theme, _Justice, Rights, Action for All Girls and Women_, and featured activities highlighting the plight of women. A free medical camp saw hundreds screened for various diseases and given medication. Skilling groups and individual innovators also showcased their products in a full exhibition.

Hon. Annet K. Mugisha, Woman MP for Bushenyi District, who co-organized the event with district leadership, reaffirmed her commitment to delivering quality services. She said she remains focused on improving livelihoods through better education, household income, roads, electricity, and health.
Calling for unity with fellow MPs, Hon. Annet pledged to continue pushing for a health sub-district hospital in Kyabugimbi, the upgrade of Nyabubare Health Center, and the success of the UCIMID project in Ishaka–Bushenyi Municipality.
State Minister for Public Service Hon. Grace Mary Mugasa, the chief guest, praised the hard work and appearance of Bushenyi residents. Responding to issues raised by District Chairperson Hon. Jafari Basajabalaba, including higher pay for local government leaders, Kakanju LC3 Chairperson Hon. Kananga’s call to build Kakanju Sub-county headquarters, and Hon. Cohen’s request for more youth in public service, the minister advised local authorities to compile a joint report. She promised to present it to the President for consideration.
As part of the celebrations, all Health Centre IIIs received delivery beds and delivery kits to support safe childbirth.
