Kampala,Uganda – Dr. Kizza Besigye Kifefe, commonly known as Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye, marked his 70th birthday today while in prison.
Born on 22 April 1956, Besigye is a Ugandan physician, politician, and former military officer. He served as president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) political party and contested Uganda’s presidential elections in 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016. He lost all four elections to incumbent President Yoweri Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986.
The results of the 2006 elections were contested in court. The court found massive rigging and disenfranchisement, but upheld the outcome.
In 2012, Besigye allowed an early internal FDC election for a successor president, which was held on 24 November 2012.
