BUHWEJU, UGANDA – In a surprising development for political observers and constituents alike, Hon. Oliver Katwesigye Koyekyenga, the incumbent Woman Member of Parliament for Buhweju District, has announced that she will not participate in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
This decision comes after Hon. Koyekyenga faced a significant defeat in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries. She garnered only 12,956 votes (28.62%), whereas her main rival, Hon. Nnamara Annet Oyes Byamukama, secured a commanding lead with 30,866 votes (68.18%). Another candidate who entered the race as an independent, Natukunda Ameria Kantona, received 1,447 votes (3.19%).
Despite speculation among her supporters that she might contest as an independent candidate, Hon. Koyekyenga dispelled these hopes with a message posted in her supporters’ WhatsApp forum. In her statement, she attributed her withdrawal to a combination of personal and political reasons and thanked her supporters for their unwavering commitment throughout her tenure.

Below is her message:
Hon. Koyekyenga’s departure from the political arena marks the end of an era for Buhweju’s representation and opens the field for new contenders ahead of the 2026 polls.
