RUKIGA – The Woman Member of Parliament for Bushenyi District, Hon. Katusiime Annet Mugisha, together with the Bushenyi District Women’s Council Executive, has attended the official launch of the Emikono Yeitu (Our Hands) Program in Rukiga District.
The program host, Hon. Dr Sylvia Alinaitwe, announced significant economic growth at household level following the introduction of income-generating projects. She revealed that she has distributed over 8 million coffee seedlings to families and initiated a village-level saving scheme that has grown to over one billion shillings, benefiting more than 600 saving groups across Rukiga District.
The Minister of State for Gender and Culture, Hon. Peace Regis Mutuuzo, who presided over the function, commended Hon. Dr Sylvia for championing women’s empowerment. She noted that while women constitute 75 percent of Uganda’s population, they own only 6 percent of land. She applauded the Government for grassroots programs like the Parish Development Model (PDM) and the Uganda Women Entrepreneurship Program (UWEP) and urged beneficiaries, especially the youth, to utilize and repay the funds on time to create opportunities for others.

In her remarks, Hon. Katusiime urged women to start income-generating projects at home as a foundation for family development and poverty eradication.
“As Members of Parliament, we will lobby and secure reliable markets for all products produced so that local products can generate real income,” Hon. Katusiime said.
She also encouraged the Bushenyi District Women’s Council Executive to benchmark and learn from the Rukiga model so that her term makes a tangible difference in the lives of women in Bushenyi.
