MBARARA,UGANDA — Despite the boost from the completed Kagera Water Supply Project, Bwizibwera and Kashaka service areas have continued to face unreliable water supply due to transmission bottlenecks, limited pipeline capacity, frequent bursts and rising demand.
The Government of Uganda, through the National Water and Sewerage Corporation – NWSC, is taking action.
As the first major step, NWSC is laying approximately 4 km of DN300 transmission main from Ruharo to Nyakisharara along the Mbarara–Ishaka and Ibanda Roads.

The larger-capacity line will significantly improve water conveyance to the Bwizibwera service area and strengthen supply onward to Kashaka.

*The new main will:*
✅ Increase hydraulic capacity
✅ Reduce pressure on existing smaller pipelines
✅ Improve system resilience
✅ Support growing demand in the area
This project is the foundation of a broader phased programme targeting transmission, pumping, storage and distribution bottlenecks in the region.
*Villages set to benefit include:*
Bwizibwera town, Kaguhanzya-Katooma, Rwanyamahembe, Rutooma, Katsyazo, Runengo, Rweishamiro, Mabira, Nyarubanga, Kafunjo, Kachwamapare, Rubingo, Kateebe, Kempungu, Nkaaka, Rweibaare, Rwebishekye, Eihanika, Kariro and Omurubaare.

*Immediate beneficiaries on the Kashaka branch:*
– Rwentanga
– Kifunfu
– Ekikeesa
– Kiyenje
NWSC says this is part of its ongoing commitment to deliver reliable, safe and sustainable water to every community it serves.
