BUHWEJU DISTRICT
Buhweju has demonstrated a renewed drive towards community transformation after hosting a series of high-impact events that brought together thousands of residents, leaders and development partners in what many have described as one of the district’s most active weekends in recent years. The activities focused on sports, tourism, environmental conservation, public health, clean water access and youth empowerment, reflecting growing efforts to position Buhweju as a model district for sustainable development.
Leading the weekend’s activities was the Woman Member of Parliament for Buhweju District, Hon. Nnamara Annet Oyes Byamukama, who participated in the 8th Buhweju Mountain Run, the National Cleaning Exercise, the launch of a new water tap at Kashenyi LC1, the Buhweju Eco-Tourism Festival and the resumption of the BCTI League.

The 8th Buhweju Mountain Run attracted hundreds of athletes and residents who covered the route from Nsiika Town Council to Caravan Lounge in Kashenyi. Addressing participants, Hon. Oyes described the marathon as more than a sporting event, saying it was a celebration of health, unity and the discovery of athletic talent capable of representing Buhweju and Uganda on bigger stages. Organisers also announced plans to expose outstanding local athletes to national competitions, strengthening Buhweju’s ambitions of becoming a recognised destination for mountain athletics.
In Nyakishenyi, residents, conservation groups and tourism stakeholders gathered for the Buhweju Eco-Tourism Festival, where leaders showcased the district’s breathtaking landscapes, cultural heritage and investment opportunities. Participants toured tourism sites before converging for cultural performances and exhibitions, with organisers emphasizing that sustainable tourism could become a key driver of employment, environmental conservation and household incomes.
The weekend also witnessed the resumption of the BCTI League, where Bihanga SC edged Kyahenda SC 1–0 in a friendly encounter celebrated for promoting peace, unity and youth talent. Leaders reiterated that the league is intended not only to nurture football talent but also to create future professional opportunities for young people across Buhweju.
Meanwhile, residents of Kashenyi-Kajaani Town Council joined the nationwide National Cleaning Exercise before witnessing the commissioning of a new public water tap at Kashenyi LC1, implemented in partnership with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation. Community members welcomed the project, saying it would improve access to safe water, strengthen sanitation and reduce waterborne diseases, while complementing government efforts to promote cleaner and healthier communities.
Observers say the coordinated activities highlight Buhweju’s growing focus on integrating sports, tourism, environmental protection, improved public services and community participation as pillars of socio-economic transformation. With increasing collaboration between government, local leaders and development organisations, residents now hope the district’s momentum will translate into lasting development and improved livelihoods.
