On Thursday, 23rd April 2026 at approximately 6:30 PM, a report was received by UWA KCA chief warden from tourists and a guide on a game drive along the Lusingiriya Track regarding a limping giraffe. Due to the late hour, the Kidepo Valley Conservation Area (KVCA) veterinary unit scheduled an intervention for the following morning.
On Friday, 24th April 2026, the veterinary team mobilized early and arrived in the area by 7:00 AM. The giraffe was located and observed to be limping, with a visible wound on the left front limb and signs of significant pain.
The team conducted a controlled darting procedure, after which the giraffe was safely immobilized. Upon examination, the adult female giraffe was found to have been caught in a snare on the left front limb, resulting in partial loss of the hoof.

The wound was thoroughly cleaned, and treatment was administered, including long-acting antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medication, and pain relief. Blood samples were also collected for further analysis.
Following the successful intervention, the giraffe, estimated to be in the early stages of pregnancy, showed marked improvement. She regained mobility, was visibly relieved of pain, and resumed normal feeding behavior shortly after recovery.
The team monitored her as she moved away safely, a clear indication of restored health and effective animal welfare response.
This intervention underscores the continued commitment to wildlife conservation and protection. Most importantly, a life was saved.
