Ndekye,Rubirizi – Rubirizi Deputy Resident District Commissioner Robina Mirembe has warned that teachers who report late or teach while drunk will be arrested, blaming absenteeism and drunkenness for poor performance in most district schools.
She issued the warning yesterday while addressing parents, teachers, and pupils of Rugyenda Muslim Primary School in Ndekye Town, Rubirizi District, during a general meeting.
Mirembe said teachers who consistently report late will face arrest. She noted that teachers are expected to arrive on time to prepare lesson plans and classwork, but many come late while drunk. She stressed that teaching under the influence is illegal, and anyone found drunk in class will be arrested and charged in court.

She also warned parents who withdraw children from school for early marriages, pledging to arrest them. She asked the community to report teacher absenteeism and drunkenness to authorities for intervention.
Mirembe urged teachers to avoid unprofessional conduct such as relationships with students, absenteeism, drinking alcohol during class time, and time abuse. She asked parents to keep children in school so they can become productive citizens.
She called on Rubirizi’s education department to organize workshops for teachers to improve exposure and benchmarking.
Meanwhile, Nagaba Zubeda, headteacher of Rugyenda Muslim Primary School, asked parents to understand their responsibilities in educating children and to treat education as an investment and a tool for their homes.
She urged parents to love and care for their children by providing school uniforms, teaching discipline, and giving them food.
She noted that parents should not discourage children while they are still young, as this contributes to high dropout rates.
