Ntungamo,Uganda – Ntungamo Municipality has given street vendors, hawkers, and unauthorized traders a two-week ultimatum to vacate municipal streets or face forceful eviction. Town Clerk Seleverio Byarufu Mukobi says the move aims to restore trade order and ease congestion on highways, emphasizing fairness to formal traders who pay trading licenses and rates.
Mukobi explained that the decision was made in consultation with municipal authorities and law enforcement to ensure a smooth and orderly trading environment. “We’re not just beautifying the town, we’re ensuring fairness to those who follow the rules,” he said.
Street vendors have mixed reactions, with some resisting the move and others requesting more time to sell their items and earn income. “I have kids in school, I need time to sell these items and pay fees,” said one vendor. Others are concerned about losing their livelihoods.

The municipality has promised to provide alternative spaces for vendors, but details are yet to be disclosed. The ultimatum expires in two weeks, after which enforcement action will be taken.
